Where it came from
The Undercity // The Initiative oversized card was released in 2022 as part of the Magic: The Gathering Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This card represents a mechanical innovation known as the dungeon system, specifically designed to facilitate the 'Initiative' keyword. It serves as a visual aid for players to track their progress through the subterranean locations of Baldur’s Gate, reflecting the set’s deep integration with Dungeons & Dragons lore and gameplay mechanics.
The design of this oversized card was intended to provide a clear, tactile reference for players during intense multiplayer sessions. Illustrated by various artists contributing to the set's cohesive aesthetic, the card emphasizes the dark, labyrinthine atmosphere of the Underdark. It was received as a functional necessity for players utilizing 'Initiative' cards, and its larger-than-standard format was chosen specifically to ensure readability and ease of use on the battlefield.
