Where it came from
Underground Mortuary is a specialized land card from the Murders at Karlov Manor set, released by Wizards of the Coast in early 2024. The card was designed as part of a cycle of surveil lands, which were mechanically intended to provide mana fixing while facilitating graveyard-based strategies. This specific version, identified as collector number 271p, represents the promo treatment offered to players, distinguishing it from the standard core set printing through unique borders or art formatting.
The art and design aesthetic for this set leaned heavily into a gothic, mystery-themed atmosphere, evoking classic detective noir tropes within the fantasy world of Ravnica. Artists working on the set were tasked with balancing the functional, structural nature of the land card with the evocative, moody setting of the Orzhov Syndicate's mortuary operations. The card was well-received by the Magic: The Gathering community, primarily for its competitive viability in various constructed formats where its ability to manipulate the top of the library is highly valued.
