Where it came from
Undergrowth Recon was released as part of the promotional suite for the 2024 Magic: The Gathering expansion, Murders at Karlov Manor. The card was designed to support the set's central mechanical theme of investigating the graveyard, specifically playing into the green-black color identity centered on recurring permanents from the library to the battlefield. It fits within the narrative framework of Ravnica, a plane defined by its sprawling, city-wide urban landscape where the hidden, subterranean layers of the city often serve as sites for illicit activity and investigation.
The card features artwork commissioned as part of the set's aesthetic identity, which drew heavy inspiration from classic film noir and hardboiled detective fiction. The illustrators tasked with the Murders at Karlov Manor cycle aimed to translate the grim, shadowed atmosphere of a mystery thriller into the fantasy medium. Upon its release, the card was received as a versatile tool for Commander and graveyard-centric archetypes, praised for its efficient cost-to-effect ratio and its seamless integration into the mechanical identity of the Golgari guild.
