Where it came from
Unexpected Potential was released in 2014 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Conspiracy, the first expansion designed specifically for the multiplayer Draft format. The set was created to emulate a tabletop experience reminiscent of a political thriller, introducing mechanics that allowed players to draft cards face-down or influence the game state through secrecy and social maneuvering.
The card was illustrated by Volkan Baga, who utilized a clean, evocative style to capture the essence of the card’s effect—granting a creature an activated ability of a player's choice. As a card that relies heavily on the specific context of its game group and the volatility of the draft, it was received as a niche utility piece that emphasizes the set’s core philosophy of unpredictability and high-stakes political gameplay.
