Where it came from
Unity of Purpose was released in 2016 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Oath of the Gatewatch. The set focused on the narrative of the Gatewatch, a group of planeswalkers forming an alliance to defend the multiverse against the Eldrazi titans. Mechanically, the card was designed to support the set's 'support' keyword, which allowed players to distribute +1/+1 counters among their creatures, emphasizing the theme of cooperative strength in battle.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Matt Stewart, who sought to capture the tactical coordination between the allied forces. The visual composition features a group of soldiers moving in synchronized formation, reflecting the card's function of enabling mass synergy across a player's board state. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid utility piece for limited formats, praised for its ability to turn a board of small creatures into a more formidable threat.
