Provenance

Where it came from

Unsummon was released as part of the Limited Edition Alpha set in 1993, representing the inaugural launch of Magic: The Gathering. Designed by Richard Garfield, the card was intended to provide blue decks with a low-cost, tactical way to disrupt an opponent's board state by returning a creature to its owner's hand. Its inclusion in the base set helped establish the fundamental mechanics of tempo and interaction that define the game to this day.

The artwork for this version was illustrated by Sandra Everingham, who contributed several pieces to the early sets of the game. Her design features a whimsical, ethereal style consistent with the experimental fantasy aesthetic of the early 1990s. While not a high-value chase card, its longevity in the game's competitive history—having been reprinted across dozens of sets—has cemented its status as an iconic piece of trading card history.
