Unwilling Recruit

Unwilling Recruit was released in July 2008 as part of the Eventide expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set, the second in the Shadowmoor block, explored a darker, more corrupted version of the plane of Lorwyn, defined by a magical phenomenon known as the Great Aurora. The card was designed to mechanicaly embody the set's focus on hybrid mana costs, which allowed players to cast spells using either red or white mana, reflecting the shifting nature of the plane's inhabitants during this transitional era.

The artwork for this card was provided by veteran fantasy illustrator Zoltan Boros and Gabor Szikszai, who were frequent collaborators on Magic sets during this period. Their design aimed to capture the visceral, forced transformation of a local creature being conscripted into the supernatural conflict defining the plane. The card was received by the player base as a niche utility tool within limited environments, praised for its thematic consistency with the aggressive and chaotic tone of the Shadowmoor block.
