Urban Evolution

Urban Evolution was released in 2014 as part of the Duel Decks: Elspeth vs. Kiora set, a product line designed to highlight the rivalry between two iconic Magic: The Gathering planeswalkers. The card originally debuted in the Gatecrash expansion, where it represented the philosophy of the Simic Combine—a faction within the Ravnica setting focused on biological growth and the synthesis of nature and civilization. By including it in this duel deck, Wizards of the Coast emphasized Kiora’s thematic connection to the blue and green color identity, which values both card advantage and rapid resource expansion.

The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Igor Kieryluk, who depicted the dense, vertical architecture of Ravnica being reclaimed or integrated by lush, oceanic-inspired flora. Kieryluk’s design choice captures the essence of the 'Simic' aesthetic, balancing the cold structural lines of the cityscape with the fluid, organic energy associated with Kiora’s magic. Upon its release, the card became a staple in Commander formats for its utility as a ramp and draw spell, earning praise for its ability to provide a significant board presence shift in a single turn.
