Urborg Volcano

Urborg Volcano was originally printed in the Invasion expansion in 2000, representing the swampy, volcanic terrain of the plane of Dominaria. It was designed as an uncommon land card capable of producing either black or red mana, though it required a small sacrifice of life to enter the battlefield untapped, a mechanical trade-off reflective of the harsh environment it depicted.

The Eighth Edition printing, released in 2003, marked a significant aesthetic shift for the Magic: The Gathering brand as it introduced the modern card frame design. The art for this version was provided by John Avon, a prolific landscape illustrator whose work is characterized by sweeping, atmospheric vistas. His portrayal of the volcano emphasizes the ominous, darkened topography of Urborg, a stylistic choice that became a hallmark of the game's evolving visual identity during the transition to the new frame.
