Urge to Feed

Urge to Feed was released in early 2010 as part of the Worldwake expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the second installment in the Zendikar block, a high-adventure block themed around exploration, land-based mechanics, and the looming threat of the Eldrazi titans. The card was designed as a common black spell, intended to provide creature removal while leveraging the set's central mechanic of +1/+1 counters, which were a defining feature of the Zendikar environment.

The artwork for the card was created by Steve Argyle, a prolific contributor to the game who is noted for his distinct, expressive character designs. Argyle aimed to capture the visceral, predatory nature of the black mana color identity, depicting a vampire mid-transformation or feeding state. Within the competitive community, the card is remembered for its efficiency in limited play, where its combination of stat reduction and the ability to distribute counters onto a vampire creature made it a versatile tool for black-aligned decks during the Worldwake draft era.
