Where it came from
Ursine Guide // Ranger's Merit was released in 2021 as part of the Alchemy: Secrets of Strixhaven set for the digital-only format of Magic: The Gathering Arena. This card was designed specifically to utilize the unique mechanics of the Alchemy format, which allows for digital-only keywords like 'seek' or 'conjure' to function in ways that would be physically impossible in a traditional tabletop game. The card serves as a thematic nod to the Strixhaven University setting, specifically the Prismari and Lorehold colleges, focusing on the connection between nature and magical scholarly pursuit.
The card features artwork by Anna Steinbauer, an illustrator well known for her contributions to the Magic: The Gathering multiverse. Steinbauer's visual approach for this piece emphasizes the blend of woodland exploration and academic mentorship inherent to the Strixhaven narrative. Upon its release, the card was received as a utility tool for green-based deck archetypes, praised by digital players for its efficiency in navigating a deck and its modular utility as both a creature and a supporting enchantment.
