What it does
3 generic mana: Urza deals 1 damage to any target.
An artificer of unparalleled renown, Urza was a powerful cipher even before he was able to planeswalk. Seeing the world as a large, integrated machine is his greatest strength and weakness, enabling him to solve almost any problem but blinding him to his solutions' effects on others.

Where it came from
The Urza Vanguard card was released in 1997 as part of the first series of Vanguard promotional cards for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. These oversized cards were designed to be used in a specific variant format where players utilized 'avatar' cards to alter their starting hand size and life total, effectively representing powerful characters from the game's lore. The series was created to add a new layer of tactical depth to casual play and celebrate the central figures of the franchise's ongoing narrative.
The card features artwork by Christopher Rush, one of the most iconic illustrators in the game's early history, who was tasked with portraying Urza, the legendary artificer and planeswalker. Rush’s design leans into the character’s mechanical nature and immense, world-spanning influence, capturing a stoic and powerful aesthetic that resonated with long-term fans. At the time of its release, the card was received as a significant piece of fan service, providing a tangible representation of a character who had been central to the game's story since its inception.
