Where it came from
Urza, Chief Artificer was released in 2022 as part of The Brothers' War Commander set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents a pivotal moment in the game's lore, capturing the iconic artificer Urza during the height of the conflict against his brother, Mishra. The card was designed as a powerful centerpiece for artifact-focused decks, utilizing the affinity for artifacts mechanic to reward players for building deep, mechanical-themed collections.
The card features illustration by artist Ryan Alexander Lee, who sought to capture Urza’s calculated, imperious nature as he constructs his mechanical armies. The aesthetic leans heavily into the industrial, steam-powered imagery established for the Brothers' War era. Upon its release, it was widely received by the player base as a definitive iteration of the character, particularly lauded for its synergy with the specialized artifact-creature tokens it creates.
