Provenance

Where it came from

Urza's Power Plant was introduced in the 1994 Antiquities expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As one of the three 'Urzatron' lands, it was designed to reward players for assembling the full set, allowing them to generate significant colorless mana early in the game. The set was created to explore the lore of the Brothers' War, a cataclysmic conflict between the siblings Urza and Mishra, and these lands represent the massive industrial infrastructure used to fuel Urza's war efforts.

The artwork for the 84d variant, one of several landscape illustrations for the card, was rendered by Melissa A. Benson. Her design leans into the thematic aesthetic of the set, emphasizing the industrial, archaic machinery central to the game's early narrative. Upon release, the set was noted for its distinct departure from the high-fantasy tropes of the base game, focusing instead on artifact-heavy, mechanical themes that challenged established deck-building strategies.
