Provenance

Where it came from

Urza's Power Plant originated as part of the Antiquities expansion for Magic: The Gathering in 1994, centered around the lore of the artificer Urza and the mechanical landscape of his war against Mishra. The card was designed to function as one piece of the 'Urzatron' trio, an iconic land cycle that provides significant mana advantages when the full set of Power Plant, Mine, and Tower are assembled on the battlefield.

The Fifth Edition version, released in 1997, transitioned the card into a white-bordered frame, marking the first time the game's core set incorporated cards from earlier expansion blocks to simplify the card pool for newer players. The original illustration by Quinton Hoover was retained for this printing, celebrated for its evocative, industrial aesthetic that successfully captured the daunting scale of Urza's ancient machinery.
