Where it came from
Vance's Blasting Cannons // Spitfire Bastion was released in 2017 as part of the Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card is a double-faced enchantment that reflects the set's central theme of exploration and treasure hunting in a Mesoamerican-inspired setting. Mechanically, it functions as a progressive artifact that rewards players for casting spells from exile, eventually transforming into a land that provides a consistent source of damage.
The card was illustrated by Johannes Voss, whose artwork emphasizes the rugged, adventurous aesthetic of the Ixalan plane. Designed as a rare, the card was intended to support aggressive red-based strategies by providing card advantage during the early game and direct damage capabilities in the late game. Upon its release, it was noted for its unique transformation mechanic and its role in encouraging players to commit to a proactive playstyle.
