Where it came from
Vanille, Cheerful l'Cie (3-039) was released as part of the Opus III set of the Final Fantasy Trading Card Game, which debuted in 2017. The card features Oerba Dia Vanille, a central character from Final Fantasy XIII, capturing her upbeat personality through original art created specifically for the trading card game format. The set served to expand the roster of available cards following the game's international relaunch under Square Enix, focusing on characters from various entries in the series to balance competitive play with nostalgic appeal.
The design of the Opus series cards emphasizes a consistent visual identity that bridges modern Final Fantasy character models with traditional card game aesthetics. This specific card was intended to support playstyles revolving around ice-element strategies, reflecting Vanille's role within the lore of her source material. Since its release, the card has been recognized by players for its thematic accuracy and remains a standard fixture for collectors focused on the Final Fantasy XIII character sub-set.
