Where it came from
Vanish into Eternity was released in 2023 as part of the Phyrexia: All Will Be One set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The card depicts a moment of existential displacement within the Phyrexian narrative, reflecting the set's central theme of total mechanical and biological assimilation. It was designed as an interactive removal spell, providing players with a versatile tool to deal with problematic permanents while advancing the high-stakes aesthetic established for this arc of the game's multiverse.
The artwork was illustrated by Games Workshop veteran and fantasy artist Anna Steinbauer, who utilized the set's signature color palette of cold blues, sterile whites, and oily purples to convey a sense of forced transition. Her work on this piece was aimed at capturing the unsettling nature of New Phyrexia, focusing on the visual language of erasure and digital-organic fusion. Upon release, the card was received as a functional staple in limited play environments and a thematic highlight for collectors focused on the Phyrexian storyline.
