Where it came from
Varina, Lich Queen was introduced in the 2018 Commander set as the face commander for the Subjective Reality deck. This set was designed to explore thematic archetypes within the Magic: The Gathering multiplayer format, with Varina serving as the centerpiece for an Esper-colored zombie tribal strategy. The card was created to provide players with a repeatable engine for card selection and graveyard synergy, effectively turning the discarded resource into a recursive advantage.
The artwork for Varina was illustrated by Kieran Yanner, who aimed to capture the regal yet decaying aesthetic of a lich monarch. The design centers on a cold, monochromatic color palette that emphasizes her necrotic authority, aligning with the dark, undead fantasy trope common to the set's graveyard-focused mechanics. Upon release, the card was widely received by the Commander community as a definitive leader for white-blue-black zombie decks, praised for its cohesive design and ability to balance aggressive board presence with tactical card advantage.
