Provenance

Where it came from

The Vedalken Ghoul was released in the 2009 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Alara Reborn. This set was unique in the game's history as it was the first to consist entirely of multicolored cards, representing the final convergence of the fractured shards of the Alara plane. The card depicts a member of the Vedalken race—traditionally blue-aligned, analytical beings—who has been twisted by the necromantic influence of the Esper shard's transition into the broader reality of Grixis.

The artwork was created by illustrator Zoltan Boros, who captured the grim transition of the subject from an orderly scientist to an undead thrall. Designed as a low-cost, aggressive creature, the card was intended to provide a functional tool for black-blue deck archetypes that utilized the graveyard as a resource. While it did not become a defining card for the competitive tournament scene, it serves as a distinct example of the set's narrative focus on the thematic merging of once-isolated mechanical identities.
