Vedalken Mastermind

Vedalken Mastermind was originally printed in the Mirrodin expansion in 2003, representing the blue-aligned Vedalken race native to that metal-dominated plane. The card was selected for the Tenth Edition core set in 2007, which served as a landmark release designed to modernize the game's aesthetic and introduce a standardized card frame for all core set cards. This edition was notable for its shift toward a more cohesive, illustrative style intended to make the game more accessible to new players while maintaining the strategic depth of the Vedalken creature type.

The artwork for this specific printing was created by artist Greg Staples. Staples aimed to capture the Vedalken’s signature traits—intellect, surgical precision, and a detached, analytical nature—by focusing on the character's intricate facial features and ethereal, blue-toned physiology. Upon its release, the card became a modest staple in casual formats, appreciated by players for its unique utility in returning permanents to a hand, a hallmark of the Vedalken mechanical identity within the game's design philosophy.
