Where it came from
Verdant Force was originally printed in the Tempest expansion in 1997, designed by Mark Rosewater and Mike Elliott to serve as a high-mana green creature that offered a consistent board presence. The card earned a reputation as a powerful finisher in casual play, specifically for its ability to generate a Saproling token at the beginning of each player's upkeep, effectively growing its controller's army regardless of whose turn it was.
The Ninth Edition printing featured here, released in 2005, updated the card’s frame to the modern layout introduced during the eighth edition core set transition. The illustration by Todd Lockwood captures the card's theme of overwhelming forest growth, emphasizing the massive, elemental nature of the creature as it towers over the landscape. As a staple of the green color identity, this printing remains a nostalgic favorite for players who value board control and creature-based acceleration.
