Provenance

Where it came from

Vhati il-Dal was released in 1997 as part of the Tempest expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a key character from the Weatherlight Saga, the ongoing narrative that defined the game's lore throughout the late 1990s. As a member of the Rath-based evincar's forces, Vhati il-Dal was designed to reflect the political intrigue and biological manipulation themes central to the plane of Rath.

The card’s visual identity was crafted by artist Ron Spencer, whose signature visceral and high-contrast style defined much of the aesthetic for the Tempest block. Spencer was tasked with depicting Vhati as an imposing, alien figure, emphasizing the creature's ability to alter the power and toughness of others. The artwork was well-regarded by players for capturing the eerie, bio-mechanical tone of the villainous forces featured in the set.
