The Viashino Sandscout was originally introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, a set defined by the introduction of complex mechanics and a narrative focus on the artificer Urza. The Tenth Edition printing, released in 2007, marked the card's inclusion in a core set, a strategic effort by Wizards of the Coast to provide a standardized, accessible entry point for new players while maintaining the flavor of the Viashino, a reptilian race native to the plane of Dominaria.
