Victimize was originally printed in the 2000 expansion set Tempest. Designed as a thematic piece of black-aligned graveyard recursion, the card reflects the mechanics of the Rath Cycle, where the plane of Rath was being overlaid onto Dominaria. Mechanically, it was intended to serve as a high-risk, high-reward reanimation spell that required the sacrifice of a creature, forcing players to balance the gain of returning two creatures from the graveyard with the cost of losing one already on the battlefield.

The version included in The List features the art by Greg Staples, who rendered the card with a dark, visceral style typical of the period. This specific iteration was curated for The List—a rotating selection of reprints featured in Set Boosters—to maintain the availability of classic utility cards. While the card is often viewed as a niche inclusion in Commander formats, its design remains a distinct example of the sacrifice-focused playstyle favored in black decks.
