Village Ironsmith // Ironfang

Village Ironsmith was released in 2011 as part of the Innistrad expansion, a set designed to evoke the atmosphere of classic gothic horror through its mechanics and aesthetic. The card features a double-faced design, a creative technical innovation for the time, allowing the character to transform into Ironfang, representing a werewolf afflicted by the set's central curse. The duality of the design reflects the core narrative of the plane, where ordinary townsfolk could suddenly become predatory beasts under the light of the moon.

The card was illustrated by David Palumbo, who captured the visceral transition from human to werewolf with a focus on dramatic lighting and anatomy. By highlighting the emotional and physical weight of the transformation, the artwork sought to ground the supernatural elements of the horror-themed expansion in a gritty, realistic style. It was well-received by players for its thematic integration of flavor and function, solidifying its place as a recognizable piece within the Innistrad block's mechanical experimentation.
