Where it came from
Village Watch // Village Reavers was released in 2021 as part of the Magic: The Gathering expansion set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. This set returned players to the gothic horror-themed plane of Innistrad, focusing on themes of lycanthropy and the balance between day and night. The double-faced card mechanic was utilized here to represent the transformation of human villagers into werewolves, a core element of the set's narrative and gameplay design.
The card was illustrated by Wisnutanu Budi Saputra, who captured the dual nature of the character as it shifts between a watchful guardian and a feral predator. The artwork emphasizes the harsh, muted lighting typical of the plane’s aesthetic, aiming to evoke a sense of creeping dread. Upon release, the card was received as a functional common-rarity utility piece within the set's Limited environment, specifically serving as a tool for players engaging with the day-night cycle mechanics introduced in this iteration of the Innistrad block.
