Where it came from
The Marvel Super Heroes Token set, which includes the number 9 Villain card, was released in the mid-1990s as a promotional insert series. These tokens were produced to capitalize on the immense popularity of Marvel Comics during the speculator era, often distributed through snack food packaging or as small-scale collectibles designed for simple tabletop gaming or trading among younger fans.
The design of these tokens follows the standard aesthetic of 1990s Marvel merchandise, utilizing bold, high-contrast character art pulled from the publisher's extensive archives of that period. These items were aimed at a mass-market audience, prioritizing iconic imagery over complex artistic experimentation, and they are generally remembered today as nostalgic relics of a time when Marvel-branded promotional items were ubiquitous in retail and grocery channels.
