Vines of Vastwood

Vines of Vastwood was originally printed in the 2009 Zendikar set, designed to reflect the set's focus on lands and growth. This specific version appeared in the 2015 Modern Masters set, a collection curated by Wizards of the Coast to reprint powerful cards from throughout Magic: The Gathering's history for the Modern tournament format. By 2015, the card had solidified its reputation as a staple of the 'Bogles' and 'Infect' archetypes, prized by players for its dual utility as both a defensive counter-spell and an offensive pump spell.

The art for this iteration was rendered by Johann Bodin, who utilized the verdant, overgrown aesthetic characteristic of the plane of Zendikar. His depiction captures the essence of the card’s function, illustrating the sprawling, protective nature of the vastwood vines. Upon its inclusion in Modern Masters 2015, the card was well-received by the competitive community, as it provided essential accessibility to a card that had become a linchpin for low-to-the-ground, strategy-driven creature decks.
