Where it came from
Viral Drake was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set served as the climactic conclusion to the Scars of Mirrodin block, depicting the total conquest of the plane of Mirrodin by the mechanical, flesh-warping Phyrexians. The card represents the corrupted fauna of this transformed world, specifically highlighting the infect mechanic that defined the block's gameplay identity.
The card’s artwork was illustrated by Igor Kieryluk, who contributed extensively to the visual language of the Phyrexians during this era. Kieryluk was tasked with translating the 'New Phyrexia' aesthetic—a blend of organic horror and cold, metallic precision—into a functional flying creature. Upon its release, the card was primarily utilized in Limited play environments, where its ability to inflict poison counters made it a persistent, if modest, threat to opponents.
