Provenance

Where it came from

The Viridian Emissary was released as part of the Planechase 2012 expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It appeared specifically in the 'Primordial Hunger' deck, which focused on the green mana color identity and the landfall mechanic associated with the setting of Zendikar. The card was designed to support creature-based strategies by facilitating ramp, allowing players to search their library for a basic land card when the emissary dies.

The artwork for this card was created by Aleksi Briclot, a prolific fantasy illustrator known for his dynamic contributions to the game's visual identity. Briclot depicted the character as a member of the Mirran resistance, reflecting the aesthetic of the Scars of Mirrodin block where the character originated. The design was received as a functional tool for Commander and casual play formats, praised for its efficiency in decks that require consistent land acceleration.
