Where it came from
Vitu-Ghazi, the City-Tree first appeared in the Ravnica: City of Guilds expansion in 2005 before being reprinted in the 2010 Archenemy set. Designed for the Selesnya Conclave, the card represents the massive, sentient tree that serves as the heart of the guild’s territory on the plane of Ravnica. The card was crafted to mechanically embody the guild's focus on creature tokens and collective growth, providing a repeatable source of pressure for green-white decks.
The artwork for the original printing was illustrated by Martina Pilcerova, who captured the sheer scale of the gargantuan tree as it towers over the architecture of the city. The design was well-received by players for its flavor and utility in longer games, effectively serving as a land that could double as a win condition when players had excess mana. Its inclusion in the Archenemy product years later served to reinforce the thematic identity of the Selesnya guild in a casual, multiplayer-focused environment.
