Where it came from
Void Rend was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna set for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy aesthetic inspiration from the 1920s Art Deco movement and film noir, centered on the struggle for control between five demonic crime families in the titular city. The card serves as a representative piece for the Obscura, a faction known for their focus on information, surveillance, and tactical precision.
The card was illustrated by Wisnu Tan, who chose a sleek, high-contrast style that mirrors the oppressive, opulent atmosphere of the set's setting. The artwork emphasizes the magical manifestation of a void-like energy, reflecting the card's function as a versatile removal spell. Upon its release, it became a staple in competitive formats due to its reliable ability to destroy nonland permanents, earning praise from players for its mechanical efficiency and thematic alignment with the esper-aligned faction.
