Volcano Imp

Volcano Imp was released in early 2001 as part of the Planeshift expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. As the second set in the Invasion block, Planeshift leaned heavily into the theme of planar instability, featuring creatures and spells designed to interact with the game's evolving mechanical landscape. The card was created to serve as a low-cost, flying aggressive threat within the black color identity, reflecting the set's focus on domain-based mechanics and color-intensive play styles.

The artwork for the card was created by fantasy illustrator Rebecca Guay. Known for her distinctive, soft, and painterly aesthetic, Guay’s portrayal of the Imp diverged from the more aggressive or visceral styles often associated with black-aligned creatures in the game at the time. Her design choice emphasized a more ethereal and fluid representation of fire and flight, which garnered appreciation from collectors who favored her unique artistic signature over the traditional depictions of demonic entities.
