Where it came from
Vona's Hunger was released in early 2018 as part of the Rivals of Ixalan expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic representation of the vampire faction’s influence on the plane of Ixalan, specifically highlighting the character Vona, Butcher of Magan, and her hunger for power. Mechanically, it functions as an instant-speed removal spell that utilizes the game's ascend mechanic, rewarding players for controlling the city's blessing.
The artwork was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander, who crafted a stark, evocative depiction of vampiric encroachment. The visual style reflects the set’s broader aesthetic of high-fantasy exploration mixed with Mesoamerican-inspired architecture. Upon release, the card was received as a situational but potent tool for black-aligned control decks, particularly in formats where the ascend threshold could be reliably achieved.
