Provenance

Where it came from

Vorstclaw was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the concluding set of the original Innistrad block, it focused on the return of the archangel Avacyn to a world besieged by darkness. The card was designed to embody the primal, terrifying nature of the forest, fitting the block's gothic horror theme by presenting a creature that is as much a force of nature as it is a predator.

The artwork was created by illustrator Raymond Swanland, whose distinctively kinetic and high-contrast style helped define the aggressive visual identity of this set. Swanland aimed to capture a sense of immediate, lunging movement, emphasizing the creature's massive, tangled form. Upon release, the card was received as a solid limited-format threat, noted by players for its ability to dominate the board state with its straightforward yet imposing mechanical profile.
