Where it came from
Vow of Lightning was released in November 2020 as part of the Commander Legends set, the first full expansion designed specifically for the Commander multiplayer format. The card belongs to a cycle of 'Vow' enchantments, which function as both a buff for an opponent's creature and a protective measure for the controller, preventing that creature from attacking the player or their planeswalkers. This cycle was created to facilitate political gameplay, allowing players to manipulate the battlefield by incentivizing others to attack mutual rivals.
The artwork was illustrated by Magali Villeneuve, a prominent figure in the Magic: The Gathering community known for her ethereal and detailed character portraits. Her design for the card captures the aggressive, electrifying nature of the enchantment, visually representing the storm-like power bestowed upon the enchanted creature. Upon its release, the card was received as a practical utility tool for red-aligned Commander decks, noted for its ability to neutralize threats while simultaneously turning them into offensive assets.
