Where it came from
Vryn Wingmare was released in 2015 as part of the Magic Origins set, which focused on the backstories of five iconic planeswalkers. The card represents the specialized cavalry of Vryn, the home plane of Jace Beleren, characterized by its unique architectural fusion of technology and magic. Mechanically, the card was designed to punish opponents who relied on non-creature spells, reflecting the tactical interference often associated with the lore of Vryn’s magically shielded environments.
The card’s illustration was crafted by artist Igor Kieryluk, who utilized a clean, structured aesthetic to depict the creature's ethereal, winged form. Within the competitive landscape, the card gained recognition as a sideboard staple in eternal formats for its ability to increase the cost of spells, serving as a tactical piece of disruption. Critics and players noted its efficiency as a hate-bear, valuing its utility in controlling the pace of the game against spell-heavy archetypes.
