Where it came from
Wakening Sun's Avatar was released in 2023 as part of the Commander Masters set, a high-profile expansion designed specifically for the Commander format of Magic: The Gathering. Originally debuting in the 2017 set Ixalan, the card was reprised here to provide players with a powerful tool for tribal dinosaur strategies, fitting into the set's focus on reprinting staple cards and popular legendary creatures from the game's history.
The card’s illustration was created by artist Zack Stella, who focused on capturing the massive, mythic scale of the creature as it emerges from the earth. The design reflects the visual language of the Ixalan plane, blending Mesoamerican-inspired aesthetic elements with the raw, elemental power of the dinosaur creature type. Upon its re-release in Commander Masters, it was well-received by players for its ability to clear the board of non-dinosaur creatures while maintaining a board presence, solidifying its place as a cornerstone card in dinosaur-themed decks.
