Wakeroot Elemental

Wakeroot Elemental was released as part of the Core Set 2020 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, specifically featured as a promotional card. The card represents a shift in design philosophy for the core set, which began incorporating more complex, build-around mechanics to appeal to both casual players and those interested in limited-format synergies. The elemental creature type has a long-standing history in the game's lore, often symbolizing the raw, unrefined forces of nature, and this card leans into that identity by allowing players to animate their lands into combat-ready threats.

The artwork for this particular printing was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his vibrant, ethereal style. Voss sought to capture the transition of dormant forest soil into a towering, sentient guardian. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid inclusion for green-aligned decks, particularly in formats where mana ramp is prevalent, though it was primarily noted for its utility in Commander and casual play rather than as a defining staple in highly competitive tournament formats.
