Where it came from
Walking Corpse was included in the Core Set 2019 expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in July 2018. This set was designed to be accessible to new players while providing a balanced environment for established fans, effectively serving as a gateway product that reintroduced classic creature types and mechanics to the modern card pool.
The card features artwork by Greg Staples, who rendered the zombie in a style consistent with the dark, gritty aesthetic of the game's necromantic themes. The design intentionally evokes the archetypal 'vanilla' creature—a card with no special text or abilities—which serves as a fundamental building block for players learning to evaluate the baseline power and toughness of units in combat.
