Where it came from
Wall of Nets was released in 1998 as part of the Exodus expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. It represents the final set in the Rath Cycle, a period marked by darker, more complex mechanics and a narrative focusing on the Phyrexians' invasion of the plane of Rath. The card was designed to function as a defensive barrier, reflecting the set's emphasis on stalling tactics and atmospheric tension.
The card features artwork by the illustrator Brian Snoddy. His design captures a surreal, claustrophobic aesthetic consistent with the dark fantasy tone of the era. The card was received as a niche defensive option during its release, often noted by players for its specific utility in limited formats and its evocative, somewhat eerie visual depiction of a barrier made of trapped, ethereal souls.
