Provenance

Where it came from

Wall of Runes was introduced in the Core Set 2021 for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Designed as a common-rarity blue creature, it was crafted to provide defensive utility early in a game, utilizing the 'scry' mechanic to help players filter their decks. The card reflects the set's focus on accessibility and foundational gameplay elements, serving as a functional tool for Limited formats like Draft and Sealed.

The artwork was created by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a clean, ethereal aesthetic to match the magical theme of the card. By depicting a construct of glowing sigils and arcane energy, the design effectively communicates its role as an impenetrable barrier. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its efficiency as a low-cost blocker, solidifying its place as a reliable utility card within the blue color identity.
