Wall of Shards

Wall of Shards was released in 2006 as part of the Coldsnap expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed to complete the Ice Age block, a block that had originally concluded over a decade prior. The card reflects the set's thematic focus on bitter, unrelenting winter and supernatural elemental manifestations, contributing to the expansion's reputation for high-risk, high-reward mechanics.

The artwork was created by illustrator Matt Cavotta, who sought to capture the fragile yet volatile nature of a construct formed from jagged ice. The design of the card is notable for its 'cumulative upkeep' mechanic, which forces the player to manage the card's increasing cost against the benefit it provides to the opponent, an design choice that has made it a subject of recurring discussion among players interested in balance and deck-building trade-offs.
