Where it came from
Wall of Spears was originally introduced in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed as a defensive creature to stabilize the board during early gameplay. Its inclusion in the Eighth Edition core set, released in 2003, marked a significant shift for the game as it introduced the modern white-bordered card frame, a aesthetic change intended to freshen the visual identity of the brand for a broader audience.
The illustration for the Eighth Edition version, rendered by artist Heather Hudson, depicts a skeletal fortification bristling with armaments, capturing the card's function as a static blocker. While the card is not considered a competitive staple, it remains a recognized example of the game's shift toward standardized core set designs that helped transition long-time players into the modern era of the game.
