What it does

Defender (This creature can't attack.)

The Earth herself lends her strength to these walls of living stone, which possess the stability of ancient mountains. These mighty bulwarks thwart ground-based troops, providing welcome relief for weary warriors who defend the land.

Provenance

Where it came from

Wall of Stone was originally released in the 1993 Alpha set as part of the initial launch of Magic: The Gathering, designed by Richard Garfield to introduce strategic defensive mechanics to the game. The Collector's Edition version was produced in late 1993 as a non-tournament-legal boxed set intended for collectors, featuring gold-bordered backs and square corners to distinguish these prints from standard game cards.

The artwork for this card was created by Dan Frazier, one of the original illustrators for the game. Frazier utilized his distinctive, classic fantasy style to depict a literal, imposing barrier of rock, which served to visually reinforce the card's function as a high-toughness, immobile defender that stabilizes the board state for the player.
