Where it came from
The Wand of Orcus was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion, a set designed to integrate the flavor and mechanics of Dungeons & Dragons directly into the Magic: The Gathering ecosystem. As a legendary artifact card, it serves as a tabletop representation of the iconic weapon wielded by the demon prince Orcus in various editions of the Dungeons & Dragons roleplaying game, intended to capture the chaotic and necrotic essence of the character's original lore.
The card's artwork was illustrated by Campbell White, who utilized a dark, visceral aesthetic to emphasize the artifact's signature skull motif and its lethal capability to command the undead. Within the Magic: The Gathering community, the design is recognized for its thematic synergy with graveyard-focused decks, where players aim to balance the power of the wand's effects against the inherent risk of its destructive secondary mechanics.
