What it does

The crumbling temples on the tortoise's back are monuments to the decadence of the ancient Sultai. Though it harkens back to the era of the khans, Silumgar allows it to walk his territory as a warning to those who would oppose him.

Provenance

Where it came from

Wandering Tombshell was released in 2015 as part of the Dragons of Tarkir set, the third expansion in the Khans of Tarkir block for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on a time-shifted alternate reality where the dragonlords of Tarkir had achieved dominance, leading to a shift in the plane's aesthetic from war-torn warlord factions to dragon-ruled kingdoms. Within this narrative, the card represents the decay and necromantic themes present in the Silumgar brood, reflecting the faction's obsession with preservation through undeath.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Svetlin Velinov. Tasked with depicting the eerie transition of a tortoise shell becoming a mobile tomb for the restless spirits of the Silumgar clan, Velinov utilized a dark, swampy color palette to emphasize the card’s identity as a black-aligned creature. Upon its release, the card was primarily utilized in Limited formats as a defensive utility creature, noted by players for its high toughness and its ability to provide card advantage through the graveyard-based mechanics prevalent in the set.
