What it does

Trample; banding (Any creatures with banding, and up to one without, can attack in a band. Bands are blocked as a group. If any creatures with banding you control are blocking or being blocked by a creature, you divide that creature's combat damage, not its controller, among any of the creatures it's being blocked by or is blocking.)

Provenance

Where it came from

War Elephant was released in December 1993 as part of Arabian Nights, the first expansion set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. Developed by Richard Garfield and published by Wizards of the Coast, the set was inspired by the themes and stories of The Book of One Thousand and One Nights. It was designed to bring a flavor-heavy, cohesive narrative experience to the game, significantly differentiating itself from the high-fantasy aesthetic of the core Alpha and Beta sets.

The artwork for this card was provided by Kristen Bishop, one of the many freelance illustrators commissioned during the game's early production to capture the specific aesthetic of the expansion. Bishop’s depiction of the elephant emphasizes the creature's role as a heavy combat unit, fitting the card's mechanical function. While the card is a common rarity, the set as a whole became highly significant in gaming history due to its limited print run and its status as the catalyst for the collectible card game industry's expansion model.
