Where it came from
Wargate was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the third set in the Shards of Alara block, Alara Reborn holds the distinction of being the first set in the game's history to consist entirely of multicolored cards, a design choice intended to capture the climactic convergence of the five distinct worlds that comprised the plane of Alara.
The card was illustrated by Jason Chan, whose work frequently captures the ethereal and high-fantasy aesthetic characteristic of the period. Designed to bridge resource management and permanent selection, the card reflects the set's mechanical focus on mana flexibility. Upon its release, it was received as a versatile utility card, particularly valued by players for its ability to tutor specific cards directly onto the battlefield, a mechanic that has maintained its relevance in various constructed formats over the years.
